This course will cover the roles and responsibilities of a construction supervisor in accident prevention and loss control. Topics include: Safety leadership, communication and expectations; Planning for site safety; Site safety management; Site security and protection; Multi-employer jobsite safety; Construction risk management; Safety and human resources; and Regulatory procedures, record keeping and documents.

Building Codes and Inspections

This course presents the materials, methods and procedures used in the construction of buildings in relation to building codes and zoning requirements. Topics covered include: Regulatory Factors in Building; Organization and Enforcement; Permits and Inspections; Requirement based on Occupancy, Requirements Based on Types of Construction; Basic Engineering Regulations, Fire Standards and Protection, Public Streets and Property; and other related Building Code Standards. Commercial Mechanical Electrical Plumbing

Prerequisite: English TABE Reading Test This course provides for a continuing study of the nature and use of the construction method, materials, and equipment associated with electrical and mechanical systems used in the construction on modern buildings. Using the Construction Specifications Institute 'MasterFormat' as a guide, this course will cover Divisions 15 and 16. Topics include: Mechanical Materials, Methods, and Systems; Fire Protection; Plumbing Methods, Materials, and Systems; Heating Ventilating and Air Conditioning, Controls, Electrical Materials and Methods; Power Generation Systems; Power Distribution; Lighting; Communications; Controls; and Testing. This course provides the student with a strong working knowledge of materials, methods and equipment used in constructing today’s modern buildings. Using the Construction Specification Institute “MasterFormat” as a guide, this course will cover Divisions 2 through 5. Topics include: The Building Site, Soils and Foundations; Concrete Products, Cast-in-Place, and Precast Concrete Construction; Masonry Products and Mortars, Clay Brick, Concrete Blocks, Stone and Masonry Construction; Metals, and Steel Frame Construction and Wood. Construction Estimating I
Type of Class: Semester
16 Sessions/64 Hours
Prerequisite: TABE Math Test or Applied Construction Math I class or test AND Commercial Blueprint Reading & Specifications class or test. See testing page for details. This course affords a basic introduction to construction estimating, focusing on the major building components and common contract documents. Students will utilize information from the CSI Master Format in addition to instructor-provided handouts. The course provides the student with the principles and skills to make accurate take-offs and perform pricing functions as an estimator in a commercial contracting environment. This course leads to the Estimator Specialist Certificate. Note: If a student has previously purchased prints and specs in another CEF course that required prints and specs these may be used in this course. A student would still need to purchase the text(s) for this course. Test-out option available. See Testing page for details. This is a Credit Course, therefore all Admissions paperwork must be submitted by student to North Lake no later than January 16, 2019.
